the team

Although this is a solo race, it is definitely a team effort. To run a campaign like this requires many people with a wide variety of experience and talents. The following are just a few of the team members.

Nathan Baron, Skipper

I started sailing in offshore yachts at the age of eleven and have sailed almost 10,000 nautical miles on the Great Lakes. I am the current Shark Canadian Champion and have placed in the top ten in the last two World championships (3rd in 2005, 9th in 2006). Other notable results: 1st offshore division at CORK Sail Week, 2nd at the Ontario Match Racing Championships, and 4th in the Freeman Cup.

Paul Davis, Coach

Paul is a two time Olympian and bronze medalist in the Soling Class, worked as a sail designer in the 2001 Volvo Ocean Race, and is currently working for North Sails and coaching Olympic athletes. Paul will be working with me on sail development and refining the rigging and boat layout. Paul’s experience working in professional campaigns will be a very valuable asset, both in the initial stages of boat and sail development, as well as managing the logistics and details of the campaign as I move closer to the Mini Transat.

George Jackson, Partenerships

George has sailed many miles offshore as well as around the buoys. He has competed in the Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race, Newport Bermuda Ocean Race as well as being a crew member in the Canada's Cup. Geroge currently works for the Queen's Executive Decision Centre. George is responsible for working on sponsorship proposals and presentations and is working hard to make the important connections for the team.

Derek Hatfield, Technical Consultant

I am delighted that Derek has agreed to be my coach for this campaign. Derek is a professional single-handed sailor that is currently campaigning for the 2008 Vendee Globe, an around the world race that is generally accepted as the most challenging sailboat race on Earth. Derek will be helping me to work on sleep management, boat handling skills, nutrition and various other skills specific to single handed sailing. Check out Derek’s website at www.spiritofcanada.net.

John Curtis, Campaign Organization and Fundraising

John Curtis is a seasoned sailor who competed in the 2004 Olympics in the Tornado class. John has also worked for the Canadian Yachting Association and is intimately familiar with running a high profile campaign from Kingston. I will be relying on John for advice in many aspects of the campaign from organizational structure to fundraising proposals and of course some of the finer points of sailing really fast downwind.

Lindsey Fair, Marketing and Communications

Lindsey currently works for the Kingston Economic Development Corporation, and has spent several years running her own company, MarketMe. Lindsey will be helping me to arrange fundraising events, press releases and generally handling the media aspects of the campaign that are so closely linked to sponsorship.

Matthew Fair, Webmaster

Matt is the owner of a successful Kingston web design firm, InterKingston Web Design. Matt will be helping me to develop and update the Minimus Sailing Team website as well as handling other technical aspects of the campaign communications.

And many more...

I am lucky to have a very talented group of friends who have offered to support me in this campaign and who will help in a variety of ways throughout this journey. If you would like to be a part of the team please contact me!
